Oct 2018: BEWARE!!! I was all ready to give this place five stars until I moved out. The location is great (still a little pricey though) but very convenient. But beware when you move out! They will try to charge you for everything that they can. I was charged to replace all of the carpet in my apartment for one small (barely visible since I had cleaned it with my bissell cleaner) mark on the floor. This should have been considered normal wear and tear and absolutely did not justify ripping up all of the carpet in the entire apartment. I even did a walk through with one of employees who worked in the office who told me that my apartment was cleaner than the majority of apartments he had seen. I made sure to walk through the whole apartment and asked him if there was anything that he thought I would be charged for and he said absolutely not. I was inform Review from Google Sep 2018: I've lived here for just over a year and Southern Village Apartments is very deserving of five stars.
Pros: Safe, very quiet, convenient location (close to UNC, Southern Village shops and restaurants, Southern Community Park, Fan Branch trail, and Morgan Creek trail) and great neighbors (a nice mix of grad students, young couples with families, working professionals, and retired folks)
Finally, I really believe the onsite team--both leasing and maintenance--go above and beyond. Its not uncommon for the maintenance team to show up within a half hour of submitting a maintenance request. They continually make improvements to the property, both landscaping and the actual buildings. They also have negotiated some very nice benefits for residents with a local grocer and a gym, both in walking distance. Review from Google Jan 2017: We endured 8 months here. The staff does their best, but the complex is well past its prime and the rent is exorbitant for what you get. The sound-proofing is poor, the HVAC unit is loud, we had to put up with water and dry-out procedures on three different occasions, we had at least 1 or 2 maintenance calls per month, there are cockroaches and silverfish, and to top it off there was constant construction noise from an adjacent hotel. All this place has going for it is the location. Review from Google Jan 2017: My favorite part of the apartment is the kitchen- tons of cabinet space, stainless steel appliances and a beautiful look. Almost everything you could need is within walking distance: grocery, pharmacy, church, restaurants, movies and even summer concerts on the green.
Review from 1/9/17 on Apartment Ratings Jan 2017: Southern Village is in a great location. You have stores right in the area plus you are close to the University. In addition you are steps away from the free bus service. All the apartments are well maintained and the grounds are beautifully kept. Southern Village provides a wonderful sense of Community with many Activities like the Outdoor Movies, Concerts, Farmer's Market and Social Gatherings.
Review from 1/3/17 on Apartment Ratings Nov 2016: Southern Village apartments have good location for us to live and go school. It also has a grocery store and some great restaurants. Our friends suggested this apartments. There is no inconvenient things so far and we are satisfied with all things here.
Review from 11/30/16 on Apartment Ratings Jun 2016: It has been great. The staff is very responsive, helpful, and kind. I love the location and the access to bus route. The only change I would make is that I wish the monthly garbage fee was optional. $30 is a lot for someone to pick up my trash a few times a month. Review from 6/07/16 on Apartment Ratings Jun 2016: overall quite good, but the new building we moved into has German cockroaches. Very close walking distance to some very lovely shops and services, great grounds and amenities. Construction of the units isn't fantastic, the upgraded unit we moved into has some odd/annoying quirks (like a toilet that is visible tilted). Unfortunately, due to the cockroaches I cannot recommend Southern Village Apts. If the exterminator they send is able to deal with the pests, I'll revise my recommendation. Review on 6/03/16 on Apartment Ratings May 2016: The Southern Village community has been wonderful, however, our apartment has been anything but. Due to ongoing nearby construction our apartment is barely habitable. I have resorted to sleeping at work (I work often at night and need to sleep during the day). We are woken every morning at 630am to the sound of construction vehicles, metal saws and shouting construction workers. The construction continues often until 7pm. It occurs 6 days a week and sometimes 7 days. I am embarrassed to bring people to my apartment because almost every window overlooks a giant construction site now that every tree has been removed.
Review from 5/20/16 on Apartment Ratings May 2016: Excellent service, nice and friendly staff. Overall an excellent experience. Enjoy living here. My kids love it too. No complaints. Good, respectful neighbors. Common areas nicely and cleanly kept. My kids enjoy the DVD loaning service.
Review from 5/9/16 on Apartment Ratings May 2016: It sounds like a herd of cattle lives above me. Whoever is upstairs (201H Barksdale) thunders around their apartment at all hours; it freq sounds like they run & jump hard. Last night I was awoken at 11pm. There is also a dog that barked nonstop for an hr from 9:30 - 10:30 pm last week.
Review from 5/6/16 on Apartment Ratings Apr 2016: When I moved into Southern Village, the apartment had not been cleaned well. The inside of the oven was still covered in oven cleaner. The kitchen sink was covered in a rusty residue. New carpet had been installed, but loose carpet threads and nails were left all over the floors. Maintenance used the wrong color touch up paint, leaving 4-5" paint blotches in several places in all rooms. The shower faucet was cracked and broken. The workmanship of the apartment overall is poor; for example,The kitchen cabinet over the sink was improperly installed -- it's rather tilted (not level). The half inch gap between the doorframe and door in the bathroom leaves no privacy. The shower faucet is cheap plastic and difficult to turn; and, It sounds like a herd of cattle live upstairs despite carpeting on all floors. Review from 4/25/16 Apr 2016: We lived at Southern Village for two years and absolutely loved our time here. The apartments are homey and spacious, and the location cannot be beat. We enjoyed being so close to everything at Market Street and Southern Community Park. My wife was a grad student at UNC, and it was a huge plus being so close to campus. Everyone in the clubhouse always made us feel welcome, and monthly wine and cheese nights were definitely a highlight. Andrea in particular is surely the best apartment manager in the business; she is always friendly and helpful. We could not have asked for a better apartment experience We would most certainly recommend Southern Village to anyone looking for a great place to live. Review from 04/21/16 on Apartment Ratings Apr 2016: I had a wonderful experience at Southern Village. Andrea and her staff were very helpful and attentive to our needs. We only moved out due to a job transfer. The grounds are clean and well kept and they made us feel right at home. I would with out a doubt recommend Southern Village to anyone looking for a top notch living experience. Review from 4/4/2016 on Apartment Ratings Sep 2015: Southern Village is very classy. There is a trail nearby that's nice for running. It's not completely trail because parts of the trail go through the neighborhoods, but still very nice though. I use to go to Weaver street all the time to catch either the indoor movies or lawn movies. Great place for professional to live at. Sep 2015: I loved my apartment here. Great location and helpful staff. Cons: a bit pricey but worth it for the area you get what you pay for. The amenities could use some updating.
Review from 9/13/15 on Apartment Ratings Jun 2015: Huff, horrible management. Upper management should consider firing her, although I wonder if she would be able to get another job. wouldn't want her to be homeless.
This is must be the worst apartment complex in America. Frankly, I wouldn´t wish this experience on my worst enemy. If you enjoy living with huge palmetto bugs/roaches, move here, because there are roaches a-plenty. Moved into the complex after taking my first job in Atlanta. Everything was fine the first night in the apartment (I was to begin my job the following day), until I got up from bed to go to the bathroom.
Review from 6/25/15 on Apartment Ratings Apr 2015: My roommate and I have lived in a 2 bedroom/2 bathroom non-upgraded unit on the 3rd floor for 9 months and we pay $1050 a month for rent. Water+trash is usually 70-90/month and electric will range anywhere from 60-120/month.
Pros: (almost everything)
-It's HUGE
-Two bus routes go through/next to the apartments. Park and ride is a 6 minute slow walk, with the NS leaving every 10 minutes during peak times
-Walkable to movie theatre, bank, Wells Fargo ATM, various health services, restaurants, Weaver-Street market
Review from 4/15/15 on Apartment Ratings Aug 2012: We lived at Southern Village apartments from 2010 - 2012 and loved it! So convenient. Average apartments, but the location and amenities and management are excellent. Love Southern Village. The farmer's market each Thursday, movies on the lawn, restaurants, Weaver St. Market... all excellent! Great place to live!
Review from 8/18/12 on Apartment Ratings Dec 2011: We've lived here for 2 1/2 years and love it! It's a gem of an apartment complex - beautiful buildings and grounds, and excellent management. The prices are a bit high, but it's SO convenient especially if you visit the UNC campus often. It's about a mile away and on the bus line. Southern Village itself has great shops and events. The movies and concerts on the green every weekend are great! Very safe. I give it my top recommendation. Review from Google Jul 2011: Lived here for two years and loved it. Great location and great restaurants within walking distance. Review from Google Feb 2011: Management very helpful and willing to work with us. Fayre and Pat in the office are great.
