Sep 2019: Great location, staff is great they let you know immediately if you have a package. Maintence comes almost immediatley if an issue arises and are super friendly. They also seem to keep the building very clean. The only con so far is that they promoted that the rooms all have walk in closets when I signed my lease which is inaccurate. Review from Google Sep 2019: I would definitely not recommend this apartment for university students. The floorplan is nothing like the one we were shown, the bedrooms have no windows. We were told we would be able to move in at least a couple of days early to get settled and instead, they had everyone in the building move in within a six hour window on September 1. It certainly doesn’t bode well for the year. Review from Google Jul 2019: DO NOT LEASE AT SYDNEY HALL. Management is incredibly careless, unprofessional, and uncommunicative. Staff turnover is continuous and it is impossible to have a continuous dialogue/relationship with those at the leasing office. Dena Costello, the corporate manager, is horribly uncommunicative and does not respect the tenants in the apartment. I had maintenance and communication issues all year long and my apartment ended up flooding towards the end of my lease. It is has been 10 days since the food and little has happened to fix it. Dena offered a $250 rent credit for my issues which is extremely small for the many problems I have had during my time here. Avoid this place like the plague! Review from Google Jun 2019: You paid a ton for the rent but the management is awful. The manager comes and goes, so you have no one to take care of the general issues. Always short staffed, so you have to wait WEEKS to have someone fix anything you need. Please do not move into this building if you have a better option. I am moving out as soon as my lease ends. Review from Google Jun 2019: I need to report this place for fraud and management stealing from students. That's it it's so on and I'm gonna get a lawyer to sue big time. I will see this management in the court system. Review from Google Apr 2019: I chose Sydney Hall because of its excellent location and price, which I continue to think are worthwhile and a bonus. However, I have been disappointed to see that predominantly negative reviews online are true. I have had maintenance (which is generally very responsive and helpful) let themselves into the apartment when I did not come to the door because I was changing. My check was lost by management, and the resulting $35 "late rent" charge is still on my account three months later despite my repeated requests to remove it. Packages are left on the floor for anyone to steal because there is rarely if ever someone behind the desk to take them. We were told we would be sent emails when packages arrived, but none are ever sent. Management's idea of an 'official' declaration of whether or not residents were resigning was taping three pieces of paper to a wall and asking us to sign them. I was very hopeful that the new management was going to turn things around, but I am disappointed by the lack of a change I have seen thus far Review from Google Apr 2019: I chose Sydney Hall because of its excellent location and price, which I continue to think are worthwhile and a bonus. Our son rented with them for the 2017/2018 school year. He and his roommate were leaving for the summer, so I went and thoroughly cleaned his apartment. I knew this was necessary since they had retained some of the security deposit when my other son lived at a different property. You can see from the photos I took, the apartment was absolutely spotless. I even emailed the photos to Eastbank and told them he was leaving for the summer. In August, they sent an email to my son saying they had his security deposit and he needed to pick it up in the office or email them an address where it could be mailed. He had not returned to the U so he responded that same day with our address. He didn't tell us and forgot about it. In November I realized we had never gotten the deposit back and I asked him about it. He emailed them and called them and got no response Review from Google Mar 2019: Lived here just for a summer, but it was a positive experience. Management in the building was on top of things, helpful. Location was great. Really nothing negative at all in my time there. I truly enjoyed living at the Radius, had overall good management, very clean hallways/lounge areas, and nice amenities and fitness room. Once the University bought Radius, I was forced to move out as rent prices for my room had absolutely skyrocketed. Sydney Hall seemed pretty nice upon move in, and although rent prices were more expensive than what I had at Radius, it was cheaper than if I had stayed at Radius another year.
To be quite honest, the only nice thing about living at Sydney was its proximity to campus. Other than that, most everything was not great. My roommates and I always had issues with the A/C breaking. While maintenance was friendly, they would "fix" our A/C and then it would somehow break a few days later. There was also a very unsightly, poorly done repair o Review from Google Feb 2019: one star is too high for Sydney Hall!
Please go elsewhere for student housing. My daughter is still waiting for her security deposit back and getting the run around by management.....she moved out in August of 2018. The refund is due...and was assured a refund would be sent in December with the previous property manager and now the new Manager Shelley has yet to refund her money and that was over a month ago.
Very dishonest management & time for small claims court!
Ridiculous that this is being pulled on students who pay rent in good faith! Review from Google Dec 2018: I had an awful experience with east bank communities. Employees were unable to answer the simplest questions, I was informed of Incorrect prices and misinformed about units and locations. They are extremely difficult to reach by phone or email, and speaking to a manager (or anyone with answers) is impossible.
After submitting our lease applications, my roommates and I were sent incorrect leases multiple times. After contacting east bank communities by email and multiple phone calls, nothing was resolved. Almost two months later we set up an appointment at the leasing office to finalize the many errors on our leases, because clearly the employees were unable to fix the problem after multiple attempts. The meeting took all of 2 minutes, and there, East bank communities informed us that they were unable to house us- although we had submitted our Review from Google Dec 2018: Not sure why there are such poor reviews. We just finished signing a lease for our daughter at Sydney Hall and it was a great experience. Caleb and Andrew in the management office were always pleasant answering our questions and our phone calls were always promptly answered. Review from Google Dec 2018: Very, very difficult management. The staff are not trained well. Everyone seems to give me a different answer for any question I have, and they say they will do things they never do. I was put over the edge today when I was not notified about the garage door being under maintenance for an hour, causing me to have to cancel an important appointment. I tried to talk to the management in person and the guy was clueless. I tried calling twice to be directed to the manager’s line and no one answered, even though I just saw the guy next to the phone. Review from Google Oct 2018: This is definitely one of the worst student apartment choices you can make around the U of M. The rooms look modern and nice, but everything is clearly built as cheaply as possible. It's also very expensive compared to similar apartments. The only reason we chose this place is because we did 2 people per bedroom to cut costs. This was a mistake.
Some of my biggest complaints:
Rude, dismissive staff that are rarely even around to answer questions, address problems, or even answer the phone. I had a very hard time picking up packages while I was working full time during the summer since the desk is only staffed 9am-6pm. They claim you can make arrangements to get your packages outside of that time but they ignore your emails, and then complain when you can't get your package within 48 hours. I've also seen numerous packages sitting outside t Review from Google Sep 2018: I lived at 412 Lofts.
I have tried to communicate with the property manager, Beth Sauerland, about my security deposit: she has fought me to whole time, has used incorrect grammar and spelling errors in nearly every email, and has continually failed to answer my questions or show an ounce of empathy.
They incorrectly deducted cleaning charges from our security deposit, and had we not contacted management, they wouldn’t have refunded us anything. Additionally, they failed to communicate with me the details of my security deposit refund until I reached out to them. So unprofessional.
I am disappointed and underwhelmed by the customer service I’ve received. If this behavior is their standard, literally live anywhere else.
REPLY TO OWNER’S RESPONSE: inability to problem solve, show empathy, or answer clearly laid out questions is the o Review from Google Sep 2018: During my residence at Sydney Hall, I thought that it was a nice place to live. However, after move out, my roommate and I were hit with a large sum of move out charges. We received only $27 back of our $250 security deposit. My roommate and I ALWAYS kept our unit very clean and ALWAYS immediately notified management when there was an issue that arose. We lived in the smallest square footage 2 bed 1 bath unit. We paid $220 for an additional cleaning service provided by Sydney Hall and were then EACH charged $80 for "extra cleaning charges." Additionally, we were EACH charged $145 for painting our small apartment even though only minimal normal wear and tear occurred. This has obviously deeply upset my roommate and I, so I emailed Sydney Hall to provide written documentation of my desire to contest move out charges on August 29th (10 days ago) Review from Google Aug 2018: Tons of hidden fees-- they want to take advantage of you! It's a normal place to live as far as comfort of the actual building, but it ended up being far more expensive than we were told and they were not accommodating at all. Be careful, they are trying to get your money! Review from Google Sep 2017: We got charged almost $600 in move-out fees for 'damages'. When I questioned one of the fees (a "full clean" fee) I was told that this would be applied if many things had to be cleaned/removed. I pressed that the apt was clean and requested photos of the damage. Here are some of the photos they sent to explain why they are charging us over $570. don't live here unless you have money to throw away.
Edit: Response to Owner
Definitely! Feel free to post the rest of the photos. I'm sure anybody will look at them and see that it was not $600 worth of damages. I just found it hilarious how these photos that I posted (which to me look like a CLEAN unit spare for general wear and tear) was sent to explain this outrageous fee.
Also, we spent hours cleaning that unit the night we moved out, so please don't act like it 'we didn't attempt to clean' yo Review from Google Aug 2017: See reviews for East Bank Communities, the parent company.
Update - On the 1st of August, they prorated my parking, and then decided to change their mind on the 2nd of August, and left me an eviction notice for the balance due.
Avoid any properties managed by East Bank Communities. They're nice buildings in good locations, however the property management is absolutely appalling. At my current building, exterior doors are constantly broken, with the door handle unattached, or locking mechanism not working. Garage door has shut on top of my vehicle, and the elevators routinely malfunction (state inspection certificates are expired). The list goes on and on. Recently, they didn't give reasonable notice before entering my apartment unit. Also, my roommate transferred her lease, and East Bank Communities refuses to furnish the unit properly, despi Review from Google Aug 2017: Avoid any properties managed by East Bank Communities. Review from 8/2/17 on Google Jul 2017: I was very dissatisfied with my experience living at Sydney Hall. As a naive first-time renter, I feel that I was taken advantage of by the rental company. I paid hidden fees that I was not aware of before I signed my lease. Rooms are very much on the small side (except for the model room, of course).
Do not live here if you think there is a possibility that you will need to sublet your room.
Review from 7/24/17 on Google Apr 2017: I was amazed when I entered my apartment for the first time. The quality of the rooms is worth the price.
The staff are so friendly and they host some events every now and then.
The location is almost on campus, and it takes me four minutes to go from my bedroom to the physics labs at Williamson Hall. The Dinkytown area is also full of restaurants and interesting places to explore.
I would definitely recommend future gophers to check this place out.
Review from 4/20/17 on Google Dec 2016: I really hope that the management is taught how to act and speak properly. They are the rudest management I have ever met. You will not even be able to talk with them.
One time, I was out of the country. Without any emails or notifications, my friend (who also lived in Sydney Hall) told me that there is a notification (written on the wall of the elevator) that told us to move out all cars from to garage for cleaning or the car will get towed with the owner expense. That is the only notification, no email, no phone, nothing else.
